“Pour out your wrath!” The devastating fiction of Passover

Uri Avnery considers the fictional story of the Passover and its devastating impact on Jewish culture: extreme paranoia and a craving for revenge against non-Jews – for Israelis, pouring out their wrath on their neighbours, the Palestinians and other Arabs, on their minorities and on their victims.

I am writing this on Friday night 6 April, the eve of Passover. At this moment, all over the world, millions of Jews are gathered around the family table, observing the Seder, reading aloud from the same book: the Haggadah, which tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt.

Whoever invented the Seder (“Order”) ritual many centuries ago was a genius. All human senses are involved: seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting. It includes eating a ritualized meal, drinking four glasses of wine, touching various symbolic objects, playing a game with the children (searching for a hidden piece of Matzo). It ends with singing several religious songs together. The accumulated effect is magical.

More than any other Jewish text, the Haggadah forms the Jewish conscious – or, rather, unconscious – mind today, as in the past, influencing our collective behaviour and Israeli national policy.

There are many different ways to view this book.

Literature: As a literary work, the Haggadah is rather inferior. The text is devoid of beauty, full of repetitions, platitudes and banalities.

History: It’s not. Though it claims to tell history, the Haggadah has nothing to do with real history.

There can no longer be the slightest doubt that the Exodus never happened. Neither the Exodus, nor the wandering in the desert, nor the conquest of Canaan.

The Egyptians were obsessive chroniclers. Many tens of thousands of tablets have already been deciphered. It would have been impossible for an event like the exodus to pass without being reported at length. Not if 600,000 people left, as the Bible tells it, or 60,000, or even 6,000. Especially if during the flight a whole Egyptian army contingent, including war chariots, was drowned.

The same goes for the Conquest. Because of acute security concerns, after being invaded once from there, the Egyptians employed a host of spies, – travellers, merchants and others – to follow closely the events in neighbouring Canaan, in every single one of its towns and at all times. An invasion of Canaan, even a minor one, would have been reported. Except for the periodic incursions of Bedouin tribes, nothing was recorded.

Moreover, the Egyptian towns mentioned in the Bible did not exist at the time the event is supposed to have happened. They did exist, however, when the Bible was written, in the first or second century BC.

There is no need to point out that after a hundred years of frantic archaeological searching by devout Christians and Zionist zealots, not a shred of concrete evidence for the conquest of Canaan has been found (nor that the kingdoms of Saul, David or Salomon ever existed).

The other side: When one reads the Biblical text attentively, without religious blinkers, some aspects gives us food for other thoughts.

Let’s take the Ten Plagues. Why were the entire Egyptian people punished for the misdeeds of one tyrant, Pharaoh? Why did God, like a divine Security Council, levy on them cruel sanctions, polluting their water with blood, destroying their livelihood with hail and locusts? And, even more gruesome, how could a merciful God send his angels to murder every single Egyptian firstborn child?

On leaving Egypt, the Israelites were encouraged to steal their neighbours’ property. It is rather curious that the Biblical story-teller, who was certainly deeply religious, did not omit this detail. And this just a few weeks before the Ten Commandments were handed down to the Israelites by God personally, including “Thou Shalt Not Steal”.

No one seems ever to have given much thought to the ethical side of the conquest of Canaan. God promised the Children of Israel a land which was the home of other peoples. He told them to kill these peoples, expressly commanding them to commit genocide. For some reason, He singled out the people of Amalek, ordering the Israelites to eradicate them altogether. Later, the glorious King Saul was dethroned by His prophet because he showed mercy and did not murder his Amalekite prisoners of war, men, women and children.

Israel forces airline to cancel tickets of British ‘flytilla’ activists

Israel has forced low-cost airline Jet2.com to cancel the tickets of three women from Manchester intending to travel to Bethlehem via Tel Aviv this weekend for a gathering of pro-Palestinian activists.

Jet2.com informed the women by email that the airline would refuse to carry them and no refund would be paid. The move follows pressure on airlines from Israel to ban known activists.

Gaza fishermen have been attacked once again by Israeli navy gunship patrolling the 40-km coastline of the besieged enclave.

In the latest incident, a group of fishermen came under fire from Israeli forces about one mile off the Gaza coast, but no one was wounded.

Meanwhile, a fisherman has been abducted by the Israeli navy off the seashores of Rafah in the southern Gaza strip near the Egyptian border. He was reportedly taken to Ashkelon port for interrogation.

Due to the strict restriction on fishing and the ban on access to areas rich with fish, Gaza fishermen sail south to the Egyptian side to buy fish.

International solidarity activists who accompanied the fishermen said Israel does not want the fishermen to get close to the gas fields in Palestinian territorial waters.

There are nearly 4000 fishermen in Gaza whose income supports around 40000 people. Since 2000, about nine fishermen have been killed and hundreds more have injured in these Israeli attacks.

That's how those grocery store loyalty discount programs work, by the way -- they profile your psychology by analyzing what you're buying. So what happens if we profile the purchasing behavior of the U.S. government? What do we find?

TSA Treats 95-Year-Old Wheelchair-Bound Veteran Like a “Terrorist,” $300 Stolen

Wheelchair-bound 95-year-old veteran Omer Petti and his 85-year-old partner Madge Woodward were treated like terrorists by TSA agents at San Diego International airport, ostensibly so TSA workers could separate them from $300 dollars in cash which subsequently went missing.

After Petti had removed his shoes, belt, clothing and other accessories he was ordered by a TSA agent to place a money clip containing $300 in folded bills into its own separate bin.

After walking through a metal detector, both Petti and Woodward were patted down, with Woodward being taken to a separate room for extra “screening” due to the fact that residue from her nitroglycerin heart pills had set off an alarm.

“When I was patted down, I’ve never before been touched in every part of my body before,” Woodward said.

After TSA workers had routed through their personal belongings and fondled their every body part , the two were allowed to leave but Petti noticed the $300 was missing.

Torture and excessive violence on protesters persists, as does Washington's support

After more than a year of harsh repression and violence in Bahrain, the Sunni dictatorship’s response to the youth’s protest movement is still generating a “human rights crisis,” according to Amnesty International.

Shiite Bahrainis – who make up about 70 percent of the population in the Gulf monarchy ruled by Sunnis – have been protesting for democratic reforms for over a year. The regime’s response was initially bloody, killing dozens of unarmed protesters in February 2011 when security forces shot at them with live rounds.

Since then, and after considerable international pressure, the government response has been relegated to tear gas, severe beatings, systematic torture, and widespread repression and intimidation. And the protest movement has maintained its strength, resorting to Molotov cocktails, rock-throwing, and attempted attacks on police.

But the Obama administration has been supportive of the regime’s stubborn repression throughout. Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and is considered by Washington as a geopolitical asset in the strategically important Persian Gulf, also serving as a bulwark against Shiite Iran.

Over $92 million in aid has been sent since Obama’s inauguration and another $22.4 million slated for 2012 and 2013. The Obama administration has quietly moved forward with a new package of arms sales to the regime in Bahrain, after international pressure forced them to delay its planned $53 million arms sale. An intelligence report based on classified information warns water shortages will soon lead to global unrest and threaten the National Security of the United States.

The intelligence reports that wars over water won’t happen over night, but within another 10 years the lack of water is expected to become crucial to the point where it can contribute to conditions that cause the collapse of governments or spark wars in areas of political instability.

It names the Amu Darya river in Central Asia and Afghanistan, which flows from Tibet through India to Bangladesh, as flash points of war because these governments will be “inadequate” to handle “political grievances” over the water coming from shared water supplies.

The report also rates the Indus in south Asia and the Jordan in the Middle East as being at “moderate” risk of political instability and rated the “Mekong River watershed in Southeast Asia; the Tigris and Euphrates in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran; and the Nile Basin in northern Africa as “limited.”

The U.S. Water Partnership will privatize water supplies in order to address the challenges outlined in the report by establishing a working partnership with global corporations and organizations.

Among the new private sector members joining will be the Rockefeller Foundation, Africare, the Coca-Cola Company, Procter & Gamble, the Nature Conservancy, Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Motor Company, Skoll Global Threats Fund, the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina, World Resources Institute, Global Environment & Technology Foundation, Global Water Challenge, and Clean Water America Alliance.

WASHINGTON — The CIA is seeking permission to launch more airborne drone strikes in Yemen, even when there is a risk the victims might not always be terrorists, The Washington Post reported.

The targets would be chosen based on intelligence reports indicating suspicious behavior, such as images of militants unloading explosives or gathering at al-Qaeda compounds.

The CIA has been flying drones in Yemen since last year from a secret base on the Arabian Peninsula, the Post reported.

The agency has been building networks of informants in Yemen to assemble intelligence reports that could guide the signature strikes, similar to its drone attacks against al-Qaeda in Pakistan, the Post reported.

US trains terrorists in Kuwait camps: Report

The United States military has been training terrorists in a military base in Kuwait, preparing them for attacks in the Middle Eastern countries.


The recruits are sent to the “Arifjan” base where they receive military training and learn methods of bombing and terror operations within a three month period, according to reports.

The US military then sends the trained terrorists as ringleaders to countries such as Iran, Iraq and Syria to set up terror networks inside these countries and embark on terrorist activities and carry out acts of sabotage with the support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The US military is currently in control of large parts of Kuwait and thousands of soldiers who have left Iraq are currently stationed there. The US dispatched some 15,000 troops to Kuwait late last year after withdrawing its forces from Iraq.

Kuwaiti residents are not allowed to enter these areas without a permit.
